For many people, the idea of receiving medical care at home may seem a little over the top. But for a lot of Sollis members, a house call can make vital care not just easier, but actually accessible. From elderly members who can’t easily visit the doctor, to parents with multiple sick kids, to travelers in an unfamiliar city, a Sollis house call isn't a perk: it's the best version when an in-person visit isn’t an option.

We sat down with Dr. Andrei Popescu, Sollis's Assistant Director of the House Call Program and National Director of Medical Operations, to understand who actually uses Sollis house calls and why. A board-certified emergency medicine doctor, Dr. Popescu has been with Sollis since 2021, first helping build the house call program in Los Angeles before moving to New York to lead it nationally. He's seen the full range of members who call for one, and what a visit can do for each of them.

What Happens During a Sollis House Call?

A house call can cover more ground than you might expect:

  • EKGs (reviewed live by an attending physician)
  • Point-of-care testing for COVID, flu, strep, and RSV
  • IV fluids and medications for dehydration or nausea
  • Vaccinations for flu, COVID, and more
  • Simple wound care and stitches for basic lacerations
  • Orthopedic care with at-home splinting
  • X-ray and ultrasound

This care can keep members out of the hospital. It can also shorten their stay if hospitalization is necessary. For example, if a member admitted for pneumonia starts feeling better within days, Sollis can facilitate an early discharge by administering IV antibiotics and monitoring vitals from home.

"We always want to avoid a hospital if it's safe," Dr. Popescu says. "If we can even shorten someone's hospital stay using our house call program as a bridge, it's a huge plus—and they really appreciate that."

That same visit comes backed by the rest of Sollis's clinical team. "Nobody's practicing in a vacuum," Dr. Popescu says. "All EKGs are still reviewed live by the attending physician, be it me or whoever's at Tribeca or Upper East Side. Everybody's accounted for." If something looks more serious than expected, there's always a second set of eyes a phone call away.

Who Uses Sollis House Calls?

The Elderly and Those With Mobility Challenges

For Sollis members who find it hard to get to a clinic, a house call brings routine labs and testing to them. It's one of the most common reasons Sollis fields a house call request, and often the clearest case for why the service exists: the care a member needs doesn't change, only who has to do the traveling.

Those Taking Care of Older, Ill, or Injured Loved Ones

House calls also give some breathing room to members who are looking after someone else. Dr. Popescu described a familiar scenario: a member who helps support her aging mother has to travel for work, so she calls Sollis to visit her mother’s home to check her vitals, run any necessary tests, and make sure she's okay until they return.

Families With Children

A single house call can cover an entire household of sick kids at once. Dr. Popescu puts himself in the parent’s shoes: "I can either put three kids with sore throats and fevers into a car to get them to clinic, or I can bring one person—strep test, COVID test, amoxicillin, prednisone—and take care of everybody at once.”

Rather than making multiple trips or waiting in a clinic with multiple sick children, one house call can handle testing and treatment for the whole family at home.

Executives Who Value Convenience

For members with demanding schedules, the time a house call saves is often worth more than the visit itself.

It's worth the time and the convenience to them because their time is so valuable," Dr. Popescu says. "We can even meet them at their office—it doesn't have to be their home. We go to a lot of hotels.”

That flexibility comes with the same clinical standards as any other Sollis visit. "All of our providers—MD, DO, PA, NP—are emergency medicine board certified. Everybody's able to do the core ER functions: evaluate, assess, and treat. If it's appropriate for a house call, I trust all of our providers to do it."

After their first house call, Sollis members tend to specifically request them again—a sign of how much they trust their house call clinician after their first visit. Dr. Popescu couldn’t agree more. "I trust their medical judgment completely," he says.

Domestic and International Travelers

A house call isn't limited to a member's home address. Sollis clinicians will meet members at hotels, offices, or wherever else is easiest, which makes the service useful for members on the road—and appealing enough that some visitors join Sollis specifically for that flexibility while they're in town.

Where a House Call Stops

For safety reasons, house calls aren’t appropriate for every medical need. Dr. Popescu's team screens for anything that can’t be safely treated outside of a medical facility or ER, including burns, stroke symptoms, high-risk chest pain, respiratory distress, pregnancy-related concerns, GI bleeding, abnormal vital signs, or signs of a serious infection—all of which need faster, better-equipped care than a home visit can offer.

As a highly experienced emergency medicine doctor, Dr. Popescu knows that every second can be critical. "By the time you get in a car or get on a train and come to a clinic and I tell you you're having a heart attack—that could be an hour and a half gone. It can truly be that quick."

For Sollis members, house calls are available in New York and the Hamptons, South Florida, Northern California, and Southern California. Availability, hours, and pricing vary by region and medical need, and distance premiums may apply.
